How to Prepare Your Home for Winter in the St. Louis Area

small_6322408777Temperatures are still relatively warm here in St. Charles, but as the popular phrase goes, “winter is coming.” And the best way to ensure a smooth transition between the warm and cold months is to be well prepared. Today we’re going to talk about how to prepare your home for winter so that you can avoid unpleasant surprises and keep your home comfortable and efficient this season!

How to prepare your home for winter

  • Schedule a furnace tune-up. Getting an annual tune-up for your furnace might be the very best way to prepare your home for winter (and we’re not just saying that because we’re biased)! Schedule your tune-up early so that you can have the peace-of-mind that your system will work properly on the first day you turn it on. A furnace tune-up will also help keep your heating bills down this season and protect your home from some possibly serious safety issues.
  • Make a schedule for changing your air filter. Running your furnace with a dirty filter will significantly increase the chances of your system breaking down – and that’s the last thing you want when it’s freezing cold outside. Mark your calendar to check or change your air filter once per month (or sign up for our monthly email reminders. This is a task that only takes a minute, but is one of the best ways to keep your home comfortable and your heating bills under control.
  • Walk your home and inspect your floor vents. Take a walk around your home and inspect all of your floor vents. Make sure that they are all open and that there aren’t any furniture or rugs that are covering them up. All of your vents need to be open and clear in order for warm air to properly circulate throughout your home.
  • Prepare your windows and doors. If your windows and doors have cracks and openings surrounding them, cold air can get inside of your home and warm air can escape. This not only cools down your home, but also forces your furnace to work harder. You can add caulk and weatherstripping to your windows and doors to keep them tightly sealed. You also might want to consider installing storm windows that are designed to restrict heat from escaping your home.
  • Clean out your gutters. You didn’t think we’d only stick to heating-related tips, did you? Fall is a good time of year to check your gutters and clear out any of the debris that has built up inside of them. This will help avoid water damage to your home when it rains or snows in the coming months.
  • Disconnect your outdoor hoses. After you’ve watered your lawn for the last time this year, make sure that you disconnect all of your outdoor hoses. If you leave your hoses connected, they can freeze up and damage the hose bibs.
